These days, almost every car from budget vehicles to luxury estates come with dozens of extra features to help make your driving experience more enjoyable and efficient. But not every car is going to come with everything you want, and you aren’t always going to know what options there are for the driver looking to enhance their driving experience. Lucky for you, I’ve collected some of my most recommended gadgets for the modern driver.
One of the more well-known devices you can get your hands on is the SatNav. This is a device that will lead you to your destination and provides live feedback of where your car currently is and at what speed it is moving. This is an absolute must-have for anyone who frequently drives outside of their home area and doesn’t have a reliable way to use a map app on their phone while driving.
Portable Car Battery Jump Starter
Known as a jump kit, this is a device that I have never taken out of my car since first buying. In that rare but ever-annoying circumstance where your car battery fails out of nowhere, this can be an instant fix. Especially for older models or a vehicle you’ve owned for a few years, having a backup to jumpstart your battery if it dies can save a lot of money and time, allowing you to get back on the road without having to ask a stranger for help or call a recovery van to get you back on the road.
Tire Pressure Monitoring Tools
Another device that can help you avoid any awkward scrapes, you can buy some very cheap and compact tools for measuring the pressure in your tires. Tire pressure is as important to a vehicle’s health as keeping on top of your oil and coolant levels and making sure you can make sure it is always up to code will save a lot of money and annoyance in the long run.
A more bulky, but equally useful bit of kit is a roof box. For any vehicle with limited storage space or for when you are taking a trip that requires a lot of extra luggage, these can be simply attached to the top of your vehicle ready to store all your extra bits and pieces. You can even find the right one for your vehicle no over at topgearadvice!
Heads-Up Display Devices
More on the luxury side of things, these devices display all your most necessary information upon the windscreen to make sure you have everything right in front of you without having to take your eyes off the road for even a second! These come in many different models, but will usually display at least your current speed and revs, as well as often what gear you are in and any warning or information lights that usually appear on your dashboard.
Slipping onto the slightly more questionable side of the law, these devices can detect upcoming speed cameras and general road detecting units. Obviously, these shouldn’t be used to facilitate speeding on public roads, but they can be extremely useful to warn you of when a speed camera is coming up so you can make sure you aren’t slipping a mile or two over the limit, which could land you with a technically correct but unfair-feeling fine.
Commonly known as Dash Cams, these are devices you can fit the front or rear windscreens of your vehicle and will record and save video while you drive. They can be hard-wired into your car or simply plug into the cigarette lighter in a less permanent state. This is one of my favorite additions to any motor vehicle for many reasons.
For a start, sometimes it is plain old fun to watch back through your more interesting journeys through lesser-visited towns and wild country areas and a great way to immortalize any exciting road trips.
The more popular use for these is to make sure that any footage leading up to a road collision or general infraction is recorded in an objective manner. This helps a lot with insurance claims and can help prove that you aren’t at fault for an incident, giving this device an extreme amount of additional utility.
All of these devices will help you out in your road traveling life, and most of them are must-haves for anyone who frequently pilots a vehicle, so be sure to think about picking up some the next time you’re pimping your ride.
